After my experience in the flash flood on 6/25, I contacted Yancey Emergency Mgt. They say that flash floods are more likely since Helene and there is an app called Yancey County Sheriffs Office that will let you know if the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood alert. Of course, this won’t always be accurate, but it is a help. Here’s the relevant part of an email I received from Chris Sigmon on this topic. It is shared with his permission.
Flash Floods will be more prevalent until the mountains revegetate. Yancey County lost 62,000 acres of forest during Helen. I would also think the large tract of land along Highway 80 that was clear-cut, just below the parkway, didn't help the situation. Runoff from that property will hit the South Toe River quickly during periods of heavy rainfall.
The Yancey Cnty Sheriff's Department has an app that sends out push notifications when there are weather alerts impacting Yancey Cnty. If you don't already have the app, please download it to your phone. That is our early warning system for such things. That said, it's only as good as the National Weather Service's ability to predict storms from radar.

More than 7,500 strikers walked out of more than 90 mines in the Paint Creek and Cabin Creek coal fields of West Virginia during the bloody 1912-1914 labor war. Bloodletting in These Hills is the story of one family caught in the crosshairs of that struggle. Written by Walter Thinnes, it was the winner of Parkway Playhouse’s 2024 Appalachian Playwriting Festival. This show is directed by Elizabeth DeVault. Showing August 1-10, 2025. Thousands of daylilies ready to dig up and remove from my garden. All fancy and some quite expensive to buy. None of them are the ubiquitous orange daylily. Anyone can grow daylilies. Email if interested-take one or take all. Flower colors will be mostly a surprise. I’m tired of letting the deer eat mine. They’ll just have to be satisfied with the hosta and phlox.
One caution: all parts (including pollen) of most plants in the lily family are deadly toxic to cats. Think—cat that would never eat a plant, wandering around in your garden-gets some pollen on its fur and licks it off—very sick, possibly dead cat. Yikes.

Golden Husky, male, intact, about a year old, we have socialized him well with a variety of people, dogs, cats, and chickens. He will attach fully to owner and will seek to be a constant companion. He is paper trained in house (if you truely must leave him), and house broke as well. Listens to commands. Protective. He was dropped off to us after the hurricane washed away all that he loved.
