South Toe Stewards
jjruegg@gmail.com
South Toe Stewards is pleased with the care being taken with debris removal in the South Toe watershed, but want to remind landowners to be vigilant. Last week, due to incomplete information, debris was removed from the property of landowners who wished to leave woody debris in place and who had not signed a Right of Entry agreement.
We are seeking volunteers to observe debris removal operations and alert a STS point person with concerns. Past observers have reported observation to be a pleasant experience with a friendly crew. Future sites include: upstream of Blue Rock Bridge, upstream of Seven Mile Bridge, and Patience Park. Please sign up for a shift using this handy calendar. If you'd like to provide a dozen baked treats for the crew, please email me at jjruegg@gmail.com.
The NEW South Toe Stewards website is under construction and will be ready soon. Click here to join our mailing list so you'll be notified when it's published. Click here to donate to our land conservation fund with the Community Foundation of WNC.

Does anyone have extra electric chicken fencing they would sell or donate or loan until we get a covered run completed? I am also looking for varmint-proof wire to put over windows and screen door. Anybody have an extra screen door? Also need extra poultry feeders and watering devices.
New neighbors in Huntdale area had major house and farm damage and then completely restored their barn and houses and fencing for ducks, geese, turkey, and chickens. Now a recent landslide took out their outdoor poultry area and fencing and the chickens and turkeys re inside a closed-up shed. I am raising some funds to help them but wanted to see if folks have extras of any poultry-related fencing or feeding equipment. I will take responsibility for anything we borrow and ensure its care or replacement.

2025 Whirlpool French Door refrigerator. Unit runs fine, is in new condition, black stainless finish, with through-the-door ice and water dispenser. One would naturally wonder why we would turn around and resell a brand new refrigerator; it isn't due to problems with the machine, it is instead my wife realizing that the side-by-side design places food too low for her damaged back to accommodate. Purchase price nearly $2500; asking $500

This week’s finds feature wood flooring remnants. You could cut them all to the same length and make an amazingly long Jacob’s Ladder.
38 pieces of solid wood flooring 2 1/2 inch wide, 42” to 12” in length - some of the wood is stamped “MADE IN USA - JOHNSON CITY”
36 pieces of flooring 3 1/2 inches wide. 36” to 10” in length - new, light finish
Have you always wanted to grind you own grain? Run your own woolen mill? This 31” in diameter water wheel is just what you need.
THREE 51’ lengths of 9 1/4 x 1 3/4 engineered wood will make sure that the tree house can easily hold the entire soccer team.
Three boxes of 8” in diameter VERY thin buffing discs, at least that what I think they are based on the box of buffing compounds sitting next to them. There are probably 75-100 in each box.
Please email Steve.north@mac.com to claim. Pick up in Spruce Pine. If no response, they are gone.

My fiancé and I are looking for a small, pet-friendly rental in the Burnsville area. We’ve been in temporary housing since Hurricane Helene and are hoping to find something quiet and out of town before winter. We have two older, house trained, & well-behaved dogs and one housebroken cat. We previously lived in South Toe and would love to stay local, but availability and pricing have been tough. Move-in timing is flexible. Thank you for any leads!

We hosted a boy from France years ago and it was a wonderful experience. I was recently contacted about another potential exchange student as follows:
-
I’m reaching out about an opportunity from CIEE, the country’s oldest international non-profit exchange organization, to people who may be interested in experiencing a new culture! Exciting news – I have a scholarship student from Germany who plays the trumpet and wants to be in the high school band during his exchange year. Paul is 16 years old and went through a rigorous process to be chosen for this prestigious scholarship opportunity.
Perhaps one of your families would like to consider hosting him?
Paul will arrive in August and will stay for the 10-month school year. Hosts provide three meals per day and Paul will have his own health insurance and spending money. Host families come in all shapes and sizes.
