The application deadline for the Emergency Forest Restoration Program (EFRP) has been extended until August 4. Landowners, including homeowners, of an acre or more of nonindustrial private land with 10% or more covered by trees may be eligible for the EFRP following Helene. This is a cost-share program run by the USDA. The federal government will reimburse up to 75% of the costs to restore damaged land, including debris removal and replanting. To apply, contact the local USDA office at 828-765-5049 ext 2 (this number is for both Mitchell and Yancey counties). Read more about the EFRP here and here.

Debris removal is expected to begin in the South Toe River between June 18th-25th.
South Toe Stewards has participated in debris removal site reviews with Yancey County officials, SDR, Debris Tech and Bryant Land Development. The group has agreed on a plan for the river from the golf course to Patience Park that will keep heavy equipment out of the river except in one biologist-approved location near Patience Park. The plan also minimizes in-stream work on the tributaries. If you would like to know what to expect on your stream or river section, contact Jess Ruegg at jjruegg@gmail.com or 828.675.2767.
We are grateful for the collaboration of Yancey County, SDR and Bryant Land Development, but we need volunteers to monitor on-the-ground work for compliance with our plan. We also need volunteers to help remove debris by hand in sensitive locations.
Fill out this form to volunteer to monitor debris removal operations.
Fill out this form to volunteer on a debris-removal hand crew AND/OR if you're a waterfront landowner who would like us to reach out to you.

Just signed away my 1994 Previa to be a parts vehicle. I am hoping to buy a Toyota Sienna. There are some years with too many problems but some that get high reviews. I live in Burnsville but will be house sitting in Celo for the month of July. If you have a vehicle you think I might be interested in please let me know. It seems that people who like the Sienna really like the later years 2020 and above partly due to the hybrid that Toyota has produced.

I am working on a documentary photo project to commemorate what we've lost in Helene and to honor our process of rebuilding. If something dear to you suffered damage, would you be willing to lend me an hour of your time to tell me about it and let me take some photos? Ideally, I'd like to check back in with you in a year, and return for an updated portrait if/when the space has reached some state of restoration, so that the series can serve as a record of healing and a reminder of how far we can come. This project is not for profit, and my ultimate hope would be to display these photos and your words locally. You can find some of my photos on my Instagram. Please reach out if you’re interested in participating or if you have any questions!

I live in a subsidized apartment building in Burnsville. Six months ago I rescued a dog who was abandoned by a previous resident. Weight is 40lbs, has been a mother but is spayed, estimated age is 6-7 years.
She and I feel emotional support for each other but she is aggressive towards other people and dogs - protecting me it seems. There are too many people here for her to be comfortable. Seems she has been abused one way or the other all of her life. I've tried, but she is too much for me. I have been given notice by the owners that she has to go. Makes me sad but it seems she would be happier elsewhere.
I will be in Celo for month of July.
